Blu-Ray Now Available

Developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) Blu-ray (not Blue-ray) also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of the new and most popular disc format. BDA was also joined by a group of some of the world's leading electronics manufacturers, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson).

The Blu-Ray format won the battle of new formats against high definition DVD (HD-DVD) some years ago. Blu-Ray was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high definition video (HD), along with storing huge amounts of data. Single layer Blu-Ray discs hold up to five times the amount of data than a single layer DVD. A new dual layer Blu-Ray format has also emerged that stores up to an amazing 50 gigabytes of data. The advantae of all this extra data capacity has huge advantages to consumers including the ability to view movie length high definition video easily and hassle free.

The reason why Blu-Ray is able to store so much more data than DVD lies in the laser technology. Without getting too technical, a DVD player uses a red laser (605nm) as opposed to a Blu-Ray that utilizes a finer blue-violet laser (405nm). The shorter wave length laser used in Blu-Ray simply means the laser can be more finely focussed with even better precision than the red lasers used in DVD units. Therefore more data is squeezed into the similar sized Blu-Ray 5 inch disc as opposed to the DVd disc.

As with most technology, Blu-Ray technology continues to improve with better precision and bigger storage capacity. Pioneer have reportedlly already developed a new Blu-Ray disc format with 20 layers taking it's storage capcity to a huge 500 gigabytes, though it will be some time before these are popular.

Along with small video and film studios, and large Hollywood studios, hundreds of the worlds leading manufacturers already support Blu-Ray with more and more titles available everyday so you can rest assured Blu-Ray has a strong future in the video and film world.
